From the beginning of this ‘Jardin Spiritual’ blog in early summer, it occurred to me that all of nature is God’s garden. The work that I do in my garden with flowers, lettuce, strawberries - whatever I dabble in - only works, only grows, only astounds me by coming forth from seed, because God established the system that made it go. And the scripture about the kingdom of God being like a mustard seed which though so tiny grows into a bush that all the birds in the garden take shelter in says to me that God’s idea for gardens is that they be populated. It’s for the birds, the butterflies, ants, inchworms, bees and even my nemesis, the squirrel. At the lake this summer I started visiting the back part of a westward-opening bay a 10 minute paddle from the cottage to watch the sunset and to see if I could be quiet and sneak up on the beavers. When I interrupted one that was feeding on lily pads in the shallower part of the bay I began to get a more complete picture of their

Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself, where she may lay her young, at your altars, O LORD of hosts, my King and my God.
